Susan Brooks-Young’s Sessions at FETC 2019:

Session $W156 | What are You Doing With What You’ve Got?

  • Room: SOUTH 220C
  • Monday, January 28, 2019: 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM

Description

Students bring and use their own devices on school campuses every day, regardless of what technologies are available to them at school, yet there are solid reasons why schools continue to provide hardware to students. As a result, it’s increasingly important to accurately identify technology currently available on your site and plan how you will make the best use of what’s available while still planning for the future. Attend this workshop to review strategies and identify steps to use the technology available to you well while planning for future needs. An online agenda will be provided for use during the conference and participants will have ongoing access to all materials referenced.

Session $W147 | Recognizing Truth and Lies: Media Literacy in the New Era

  • Room: NORTH 220G
  • Monday, January 28, 2019: 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM

Description

The spread of misinformation is nothing new, but websites and social media make it far easier to distribute and more difficult to detect. This session explores strategies educators can use themselves and with students to effectively evaluate the truth in what they read, see, and hear. As a result of attending the workshop, participants will become familiar with common methods employed to distort the meaning of numbers and statistics, review effective strategies for evaluating words, and evaluate the authenticity of information in examples presented to them in the session. An online agenda will be provided for use during and after the conference. Participants will be able to access all materials referenced.

Session $W055 | Doing the Right Thing: Digital Citizenship in 2019

  • Room: SOUTH 220B
  • Sunday, January 27, 2019: 1:30 PM – 3:30 PM

Description

Good digital citizenship is increasingly complex. Come to learn about recent concerns, including safeguarding personally identifying information, managing one’s online persona, and school safety and social media. As a result of attending the workshop, participants will: * Review and discuss the critical need for safeguarding personally identifiable information. * Explore how one’s digital tattoo (or digital footprint) is created and follows its owner everywhere. * Explore why social media is so compelling for students and adults alike and explore ways it might be included in a school safety plan. An online agenda will be provided for use during and after the conference. Participants will be able to access all materials referenced.

This session offers an overview of these strategies and easy-to-use implementation techniques so participants can begin making changes today. As a result of attending this session, participants will review five strategies teachers and students can use to increase their sense of well-being, engage in activities that employ these strategies and are designed for classroom use, and leave with resources they can use immediately to increase personal well-being.
