I Dare You to Double Academic Achievement

Low-impact technology use in education is a wicked problem. Wicked problems are important, complex, multi-faceted, ill-structured, ill-defined, and as yet un-resolved problems that matter (Rittel & Webber, 1978). Disrupting the epidemic of low-impact technology use is a wicked problem that has mattered to Dr. Sonny Magana for over 35 years. A pioneering education researcher and author, Sonny synthesized the research evidence on pedagogy and technology into the T3 Framework for Innovation in Education. The strategies in the T3 Framework have an observed effect size that is equivalent to a quadrupling of academic achievement (Haystead & Marzano, 2009; 2010; Haystead & Magana, 2013; Magana & Marzano, 2014; Magana, 2016; 2017; 2018). Here are three discussion questions:

  2. In what ways have we developed school systems that are technologically rich. but innovatively poor?
  3. What will we commit to do to double academic achievement in our classrooms, schools, and districts?

Dr. Sonny Magana is an award-winning teacher, best-selling author, and pioneering researcher. His book, Disruptive Classroom Technologies: A Framework for Innovation in Education, introduces the T3 Framework for Innovation which been hailed as “a visionary work; inspirational,” (Marzano, 2017), a “brilliant breakthrough in our understanding and use of technology for learning” (Fullan, 2017), and, “a major step forward…the T3 Challenge is a powerful, credible, and exciting challenge: Let’s do it!” (Hattie, 2018).

Sonny was awarded the Milken Family Foundation Educator Award and the Washington Governor’s Commendation for Educational Excellence. He holds a bachelor of science degree from Stockton University, a master of education degree from City University, and a doctorate in educational leadership from Seattle University.
